Coal talks near deal as miners face short strike
Washington AP negotiators for the soft coal industry and the United Mine Workers reached a tentative three year contract. Union president Sam Church predicted a four to five day strike despite a wage and benefit increase of about 36 percent. The agreement, which must be approved by the bargaining council and rank and file, would keep the existing multiemployer pension and drop broader Sunday mine opening plans.
