Floyd Childress of NOAA spoke at Hood College on the Monitor wreck site near Cape Hatteras. The 1862 ironclad, designed by John Ericsson, fought the Merrimac at Hampton Roads and sank later that year. its wreck was found by Duke Marine Lab in 1972 and designated a protected site by NOAA.
