Gag Rule Upheld by Maryland Senate Vote 17 11
In Annapolis on March 22, 1972, the Maryland Senate rejected a bill to prevent courts from adopting rules restricting press freedom by a 17 to 11 vote. Senator Stromberg sponsored the measure, while Senate President Byrnes opposed, arguing Rule 904 protects fair trials. The bill aimed to widen Rule 904 beyond Baltimore to the state, prompting strong opposition from the Maryland Press Association and legal professionals. A separate note mentions a square dancing event sponsored by the Frederick County Recreation Association at Elms Street School with Ralph Case and his orchestra providing music.
