Maryland road plan eyed amid high traffic future
Figures presented show five year highway spending in Maryland rising from 10 million in 1947 to an estimated 40 million in 1949. Official notes 2,300 of 4,600 miles are undersized for current traffic and a 15 to 20 year effort is needed to reach adequate highway levels while acknowledging ongoing tax and design challenges. Toll Roads Possible In Maryland
Hagerstown March 22 Chairman Robert M. Reindollar of the State Roads Commission said Maryland may have to build toll roads to help finance its long range highway program. He spoke to the Hagerstown Lions Club and outlined a $200,000,000 five year overhaul begun after the 1947 General Assembly. The first $25,000,000 bond issue will be sold soon. after that tolls may be used on new highways between Baltimore and Washington and other routes, though avoided if possible. The plan aims to spend in every county and build roads within 15 miles of Baltimore and Washington, with $90,000,000 needed for 108 miles near the national capital. The state also loses about $3,000,000 annually from residents buying gasoline in Maryland.
