Mandel Seeks Reimposed Federal Price Controls in Maryland
Governor Marvin Mandel called price increases outrageous and said he will personally appeal to President Nixon to reimpose federal price controls. He criticized the rapid removal of controls, urged the president to act quickly, and supported meat boycotts as a means to underscore inflation. Mandel also voiced doubts about the expanded death penalty bill, hoping Senate amendments narrow its scope.

Drug Study Panel Presents Findings
Washington AP The National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse presents a two year one million dollar study to Congress and the President. Key recommendations call for a new federal anti drug agency with a five year limit and state analogs, a shift from punishment to treatment, and broader improvements in law enforcement, funding for statewide treatment, and stricter control of drug information and advertising. The panel also urges restraint on classroom drug instruction and cautions against overuse driven prescriptions. The prior report urged legalization for casual marijuana users, a view largely ignored by Congress, while California voters rejected a similar proposal last November.

Humane Society and Sanitary Commission Seek Less Funds
Frederick County Commissioners heard budget requests from the Frederick County Humane Society and the Metropolitan Sanitary Commission and both sought about $1,000 less than the current year. The Humane Society asked for 13 265 dollars versus 14 340 last year while the Sanitary Commission sought 203 633 dollars. Norman Chamberlin, president of the Humane Society, said the shelter has recovered from Hurricane Agnes and interior repainting is complete. He cited delays in starting a county spaying program and noted last year’s 1 000 grant would be carried over. He urged a local animal control ordinance as well. Commissioner Derr said such an ordinance would require the county delegation to the General Assembly. Cook outlined reimbursable budget items for the Sanitary Commission.
