White House backs Gray for FBI director amid Watergate clash
The White House reaffirmed support for L. Patrick Gray III as FBI director nominee while Democratic lawmakers accuse the Nixon administration of muzzling him. Gray testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a seventh day, citing orders from Atty. Gen. Kleindienst to limit discussion of the Watergate investigation. Senator Tunney and others pressed for access to files, while Republican leaders defended presidential support and criticized attempts to politicize the nomination. Gray, acting FBI chief since May, urged a final vote and argued for a clear judgment on his suitability.
