Labor Shortage Threatens Maryland War Crops
The State Farm Labor Committee approved plans to recruit more farm labor and expand camps to house workers after experts warned the labor shortage threatens Maryland war food crops. A $1,379,000 Congressional appropriation will fund foreign labor importation and camp establishment for cannery and processing workers. Paul Nystrom proposed converting county high schools into dormitories with meals in cafeterias and transport by school buses. Fifteen camps for girls and Women’s Land Army members and nine camps for migratory and foreign workers were proposed, with possible use of abandoned Army camps due to material shortages. The supervisor said about 5,500 emergency workers would still be inadequate.
