Bigger Take From Tracks Is Possible
Annapolis March 19 The House of Delegates approved a tentative measure increasing the state share of betting def from tracks and harness tracks from 10 to 12 cents per dollar plus breakage, yielding an estimated $65,000 extra for two years to the State Fair Board and about $30,000 for each half mile track, $60,000 for each harness track. Delegate Nowakowski opposed, saying it bails out Ocean Downs and hurts bettors. War On Dope Peddlers: Speaker Lubber proposed conficating autos used to transport narcotics, part of a city and state effort amid a crackdown on narcotics and marijuana use by youths. Also floated a constitutional amendment for Lieutenant Governor, similar to 1947 defeat. Senator Barton proposed an income tax reform with a 24.5% rate, closing earned versus investment income gaps. Ben Marsh noted the revenue gain at about $55,000 yearly from a flat rate. Additional changes would broaden deductions and include employer pension contributions as gross income. MEETING ON PRICES: A price regulation meeting is planned in Hagerstown March 26 at 2 p.m. at Franklin Court Auditorium, with retailers from Cumberland, Hagerstown and Frederick. Edgar McShane and Thomas Jacobs to answer questions.
