Davis and Streets Superintendent Roger Cook were minutes from danger when a phone call diverted the engineer to speak with Cook, saving both men. Foreman Marion Rice acted quickly to smother flames on a seriously burned coworker, Calvin Lidie Sr., using his coat. The blast damaged nearby equipment, delayed operations, and scattered asphalt over parked cars. investigators assessed remaining asphalt and noted no major plant damage beyond the incident site.
