Reward Offered for Lost Jet Plane in Southern Maryland

A 21,000 dollar reward was posted for locating an experimental Navy jet plane vanished last Monday near Drum Point across the Patuxent River from the Navy air station. The Chance-Vought division of United Aircraft, maker of the XF7U Cutlass, added 50 dollars for information. Pilot William H. B. Miller, a veteran of Pacific carrier warfare, disappeared with the aircraft, which is a radical design with swept back wings and dotail and faster than 600 miles per hour.

Refugees Aid From Slain Woman Revealed In Letter

Des Moines reports reveal a letter from Mrs. Horace Underwood written 19 days before her murder in Korea describes aid for refugees who fled Communist terrorists to Seoul. She thanked a Des Moines Presbyterian church group for clothing donations, noting newborns and mothers sheltered by blankets and rompers. Also listed is a birthday party for David Lee Waltz, aged two, at 230 East Sixth Street with numerous relatives and friends in attendance.

First Tax Receipts Pass Year Ago Mark

Washington March 18 In come tax collectors counted 749 557 272 in receipts the first day after the March 15 deadline for returns a Treasury report showed. This was above last year’s 625 779 268. It was unclear if faster counting or late returns caused the rise. Finishing near deadline returns usually takes two weeks. Receipts lagged behind estimates for a 1949 deficit but could reduce or erase it. Coal mine shutdown hits steel mills in Farrell plant

The Sharon Steel Corp plans to close a blast furnace and four open hearth furnaces next week at its Farrell Pennsylvania plant, laying off 200 to 300 workers. The move follows coke shortages tied to the coal mine shutdown, drawing warnings of dwindling anthracite supplies from hard coal operators while UMW leaders deny imminent shortages. Ralph Taggart, head of the Anthracite Operations Association, cautioned about depleted hard coal stocks.

Miners Nationwide Left Off Work In Protest

Walkout in Anthracite Fields Sparks Public Interest

The hard coal strike stemmed from a violation of the anthracite contract with miners saying work is due only when willing and able. Taggart warned that short boat supplies would hit consumers along the eastern seaboard from New England to Virginia. About 57 million tons of anthracite were mined last year by roughly 75,600 UMW members while U S food packers distribute through over 750,000 retail outlets.
