Frederick City Mayor E. Paul Magaha withdraws from the mayoral race citing business pressures. He was the sole announced candidate and will serve until the end of his term, supporting an orderly transfer to the incoming administration. The mayor earns $8,000 annually plus a $1,000 expense allowance.
Independent gubernatorial candidate Hyman A. Pressman urged a Maryland state lottery to fund education. As Baltimore City comptroller he proposed $3 tickets and about $40 million first-year revenue, arguing funds would cover educational costs and ease local taxes. He noted global adoption of state lotteries and cited past Maryland issues with private lottery licenses.
Emmitsburg police report 700 pairs of men trousers worth 8400 stolen from the Loudoun Manufacturing Company plant on West Main Street. The theft occurred overnight, entry gained by breaking a rear window and window lock, then front door was closed from inside before thieves fled through the same window. This marks the third similar theft this month. earlier on March 1 approx 18180 dollars of clothing were stolen from two Carroll County establishments. Officer Wilmer E. Law led the investigation.
Frederick officials consider annexing over 400 acres northeast of current limits. A survey and annexation resolution are planned for the April 14 meeting. Property owners, including Peters Farm owner Eric Bair, back the move with shared survey costs. OO F indicates support pending HQ approval, and tax relief could run up to five years until services are in place.

Charles Andrews of East Fifth Street received a suspended 25 dollar fine for disorderly conduct after a dispute involving a man bringing a monkey to threaten him. Police testified a fight was broken up. Benjamin Bellassai was charged with assault and battery but posted collateral and did not stand trial. Magistrate Stanley Y. Bennett presided.

Frederick Memorial raises funds for an 850000 building drive with gifts totaling 15000. James McSherry notes a Darby gift will fund a private and a two bed room in the new medical surgical wing. The Surgical Supervisor’s office is funded by gifts from Henry L. Davis Mrs Harrison McAlpine and Mrs Richard F. Nallin in honor of Miss Amy Day.
Mayor Gilbert S Stroup announced his bid for reelection and Councilman Joseph R Harp also entered the race for the May 9 general election. Stroup and all five town council members face reelection as their terms expire in May. Other commissioners include Robert L Falkenstein Elmer R Martin and Howard L Metzger. Martin said he must search his soul before deciding, while Falkenstein described himself as undecided.
