Board approves new Grimes aide in Frederick

The Frederick City Board of Aldermen unanimously approved John Kendall as administrative assistant to Mayor Jim Grimes. Kendall, 55, replaces Carolyn True who resigned to relocate to Virginia. Kendall said his mission is service and total responsiveness to the mayor and board, with no intent to seek office. He noted his Army career and prior municipal posts in Brunswick and Taneytown, and his plan to stay with Frederick City as well as support a city county partnership. The board also approved amendments to the Industrial Pretreatment Ordinance, a one way tweak for Hoffmans Alley, a policy for antennas on towers, a $750 monthly Horizon Cellular lease for nine antennas on the water tower, and a $9,000 inter-department budget transfer for overtime and maintenance.

Stups Bill May Expand HIV Exposure Notice to ER Staff

Saint state lawmakers debated expanding confidentiality rules to emergency room workers for possible HIV exposure after a deceased patient. Delegate Morhaim urged opposition to Marriott amendment claiming frontline health workers need protection. County considers credit card contract concerns

Commissioner David Gray questioned signing with a single credit card vendor while Mrs. Filby noted the department could accept other cards but would incur user fees for the county. The county would receive tax payments the next day with no liability if residents don’t pay their card bills. A notice in the July 1 tax bill will explain using the Discover card.

The FDA approves the long awaited Varivax chickenpox vaccine from Merck & Co, the nation s first protection for about 4 million Americans who contract the disease each year. Merck says the vaccine is 70 to 80 percent effective at preventing chickenpox lesions and that infections in vaccinated children are milder.
