Frederick officials approve lower voting age aligning with federal law at a regular meeting with unanimous support. The decision comes amid a taxi fare dispute where Independent cab owner George Ambush opposes higher rates for extra passengers and serves as a counterpoint to Yellow Cab Co. position voiced by David Weinberg.
President Nixon asks Congress to pause all new federal court ordered pupil busing through July 1 1973 or until broader reforms pass. He proposes an Equal Educational Opportunities Act offering about 2.5 billion dollars in aid for schools with over 30 percent poor students and about 300 dollars per pupil in need.
Frank Mentzer, superintendent of Catoctin Mountain Park, deems a new east-side highway near the Great Furnace Wall a “darned shame” and warns it would harm the furnace complex. Health officer Dr Charles Spicknall asks county commissioners for 515 478 57 dollars|percent of the 869 034 Health Department FY 1973 budget. Social Services head Geneva Barthel seeks a 51 471 rise, bringing total social services to 2.4 million, with a county share 353 710 and state 1 373 769 and federal 691 677. Spicknall warns only minimum funding could force cuts in programs such as rheumatic hearing disease epilepsy and home health care while mental health and environmental health would also be trimmed. 13 or 14 positions could be eliminated. The proposal seeks 191 200 more than current 678 034 to expand services, boosting public health nursing by 61 683 mental health by 43 391 and environmental health by 64 474.
A trio stranded after a rainstorm and a missing car key were aided by Maryland State Police. Officers located the group at Cozy Restaurant, then escorted them along U S 15 toward Frederick, with further delays near Catoctin Furnace before a second trooper transported them home safely.
