Frederick Memorial Hospital asked the Board of County Commissioners for 20000 more to cover charity accounts unpaid. The hospital reported charity cases rising from 86857 to 133447 dollars, a 54 percent jump, with welfare costs nearly doubling to 59743 dollars.
About 300 parents and teens in Walkersville voiced support Monday for public sex education to tackle illegitimacy and forced marriages. The gathering at the school proposed inviting physicians clergy and counselors to share information, plus more community discussions and a possible social rules framework.
A Taney Court Apartments fire near Frederick Shopping Center caused 6 000 to 7 000 dollars in damage and one pet canary death. The blaze started in an electrical junction box between two units and spread through partitions. No residents were home. Sgt. Larry Skiles and Alvin Fields occupied the two affected flats. Firefighters used multiple trucks and tore through walls to reach the flames. The Skiles were away at Walter Reed Army Hospital. one vacant apartment may house a family until repairs.
President Johnson selects comedian Bob Hope to replace Henry Cabot Lodge on the Distinguished Civilian Service Awards Board. Hope does not become ambassador to South Vietnam but will serve on the board that recommends Medal of Freedom winners.
Milton J Brunk will become chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board at the annual dinner meeting Thursday at 6 30 pm in the Hotel Frederick replacing Hilda Croghan who becomes secretary. Lt Col Paul Thronburg will install the officers. Col George H Marshall will be the principal speaker. Capt and Mrs Woodcock report on local work.
Pen Mar near the Maryland Pennsylvania line faced abandonment as a state park after a conference in Hagerstown. Maryland Forests and Parks officials met with Washington County commissioners to review the 75 acre site and discuss a possible first hand inspection before final decisions. The state abandoned park plans despite a large petition, while Western Maryland Railway still held title to the park property.
Mrs Dwight D McKinney appointed executive secretary of the Frederick County Chapter of the American Cancer Society succeeding Leon Howard who resigned to focus on home duties. McKinney previously medical secretary to Dr Frank Camazo and held roles at Main and Company in New York City and First Methodist Church in Warren Ohio. She earned a BS in business admin from West Virginia University and is active with Fort Detrick Officers Club Auxiliary. The McKinneys reside on Wilson Place and have three children.
Early red clover seed for sale at 27 dollars a bushel by Willard R. Smith. Also offered full size maple crib, red and chrome high chair, apartment size gas stove. Numerous inquiries followed the classified ad.

Maryland eight congressmen meet to shape districts for a federal hearing Friday. Atty. Gen. Finan says a plan preserving Baltimore City's three districts by shifting population from Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties is favored by most. Judges ask whether they can draw lines themselves as three options are considered: keep current districts, hold at large elections, or let the court redraw.
Thousands marched up Fifth Avenue in a lively St Patrick’s Day parade. About 150,000 participants from Irish and non Irish backgrounds joined the northbound procession from 44th Street past the Catholic cathedral. President Johnson planned to attend the Friendly Sons dinner at the Waldorf Astoria and travel by helicopter to Kennedy Airport then Andrews Air Force Base before returning to the White House.
The U S Civil Service Commission announced Walkersville postmaster examinations open until April 7. Acting postmaster is Charles D Hoke. the permanent post pays 5950 yearly. Applicants need at least 1% years experience, may substitute education for nine months, must pass a written test, and reside within the office delivery area for one year prior to closing.
President Johnson urged Congress to raise federal pay in an election year arguing two million workers would lack fair adjustments without action. He did not specify the amount and noted funds are in the current budget. House defeated a 10,000 raise for top salaries.
Two men from the State Income Tax Division opened offices at Winchester Hall to aid residents in filing state income tax returns. They work in the maintenance supervisor's office and will be available through April 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. weekdays.
Two of three major brush fires near Los Angeles were checked as winds eased. Fire chiefs Kling er and Stolley reported the Verdugo Hills blaze had burned over 7,000 acres and the San Rafael Hills fire about 2,500 acres, with no containment yet and hot spots burning. If weather stays favorable, authorities expected containment by late afternoon.
Baltimore AP reports a two hour meeting led to a plan to rehabilitate Olympic Insurance Co. of America. Deputy state insurance commissioner John H. Coppage said an acceptable plan was presented and outside interests in Florida will invest 210000 dollars, though the interests were not named yet pending finalization.
National Education Project for the Deaf directs a field test of filmed IBM keypunch lessons for deaf trainees. Ambrosen at Maryland School for the Deaf leads with Ruth Carney assisting. Six centers nationwide host training and seven instructors, including four deaf, undergo a two week Washington session and a three month field use period.
