State Appeals Court Won't Rule On Jelke Trial Ban
A New York State Appeals Court split 3 2 refused to rule on whether press and public could be barred from the Jelice vice trial. The majority left General Sessions Judge Francis L Valente s ban in force during testimony against Minot Mickey Jelke, keeping sealed state testimony. The decision offers no guidance for future bans and upholds the judge s courtroom closure as proper for the moment. The ruling centers on press freedom and the right to appeal Valente s order rather than on Jelke s case merits.
