Mathias weighs Neutrality Treaty amid canal concerns

Sen. Mathias signaled support if amendments are attached to the Neutrality Treaty and he joins a two thirds majority only with changes. He warned about the Panama canal handover by 2000 and noted 20 percent of Baltimore port traffic uses the canal. He cited 20,000 letters on the topic, with 35 percent from outside Maryland, and called the treaty an open question.

In Phoenix the Oakland A's sent Vida Blue to the San Francisco Giants for seven players and cash. Graceham Bird Depredation Aid Awaiting Requests

Graceham Agriculture reports no requests for help from area farmers facing bird depredation. A year ago a nuisance bird control bill passed but remained unfunded. The bill empowered the Secretary of Agriculture to act with an advisory committee to guide policy, and a fall meeting urged draft guidelines that were still in preliminary form Thursday morning.

Five Injured In Chlorine Gas Leak At Clorox Plant

A runaway 100 ton chlorine tanker car derailed near the Clorox plant on West Fifth Street at 11 18 am releasing gas. Five people were treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital including four Clorox employees and one independent truck driver. The release was contained by a safety valve and the plant, police, and fire crews evacuated nearby areas.

Improper milk equipment installation case proceeds

A circuit court jury will resume testimony in the Baker versus Cox property damage suit over alleged faulty Surge milking system installation at Balacheck Farms near Libertytown. The Bakers claim about 30 000 in economic losses from mastitis and cattle deaths from 1974 contract work. James Baker and Eleanor Baker testified. Knoxville man injured in shooting mishap

Roy D. Loy Jr., 42, of Knoxville, underwent surgery for severe arm injuries after a self inflicted shotgun wound. Police said he had fired a shot into his house before the incident and was transported by Brunswick ambulance to Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Industrial production rises 0.5 percent in February

Washington AP reports that despite a coal strike and severe winter, U S industries posted a 0.5 percent gain in February, rebounding from a sharp January slowdown. The Federal Reserve said weather and the coal strike trimmed the increase by about 0.2 percent.
