Pencil as essential to gardeners in planning crops

Ed Bender of the University of Maryland Extension urges gardeners to treat a pencil as vital as a hoe. A good garden plan guides succession from spring to fall, with nine planning tips: orient rows north-south, contour across slopes, match row spacing to cultivation, avoid overplanting, store produce for canning, plan for succession and winter crops, group early crops, keep tall crops from shading small ones, and place perennials to one side. The guide Vegetable Gardens from Maryland Extension can be requested from county agents or Extension Bulletin 141.
