Red Trawler Blown Up In Viet Coast Battle
SAIGON AP American warships fought a running duel off the South Vietnamese coast with a large arms smuggling Communist trawler which beached and detonated charges as a US Navy patrol boat was shot at. Salvage crews recovered contraband and searched for more. The clash occurred about 100 miles south of the 17th Parallel. Two similar trawlers last year yielded arms and supplies. Navy officers said today’s interception could prove important. Half a dozen heavy Communist mortar attacks in the central highlands left one US soldier dead and 75 wounded. Heavy weather limited US warplane missions to 92, mostly against supply lines and rail targets in the southern coast.
