Judge Hammond Urner urges public turnout at the Y M C A auditorium on Saturday at 2 PM for selecting the county ex service memorial design. Two designs will be shown by the Design Committee chaired by Judge Worthington, with ample discussion and the aim to reflect the community’s sentiment.
The Maryland National Guard will establish a summer camp on the Gunpowder river banks at Edgewood within the arsenal grounds. Guardsmen will be trained by regular army soldiers and quartered with them this year. For the first time in years the entire Maryland Guard will attend camp together, with infantry, artillery and other units gaining exposure to multiple service roles. Dates for the camp have not yet been set.
Grayson H Mercer, real estate and insurance agent, announces multiple transactions. Properties include two six room brick dwellings at 14 16 East Street to Charles E Burger, and a six room modern dwelling at 332 East Church Street to John V Bowers, among others. Chas Wertheimer buys 28 acres north of the Fre nch Pike near Frederick, adjoining Wenheimer 128 acres, with Miss Cora Staley visiting Emmitsburg.
The State prosecutes Charles Six for unlawfully disposing of liquor in a trial before Judge Glenn H. Worthington. Three witnesses testified for the state about a purchase at Sixth and Bentz streets. Defense witnesses described Six as bedridden with gastritis on Monday November 21. The court overruled motions to dismiss and quash. demurrer sustained but state amended writ.
President Harding arrived at Palm Beach aboard the McLean houseboat and fished from a local smack in Lake Worth. The party stayed on the boat, planned a golf game in the afternoon, then boarded a special train back to St Augustine.
Fifteen bills from Montgomery county to reform county government include flat salaries for commissioners and sheriff, creation of a police fund, expanded police court powers at Rockville, a county school property superintendent at 2500 dollars, one county assessor, and road bond authority up to sixty thousand dollars to resurfacing state-accepted roads.

Mrs. George Walker of Chambersburg weekends with daughter Catherine Walker, Hood College student. Charles Jones of Baltimore spends several days in Emmitsburg. M A Real of Frederick spends several days here. Mrs. Ann R. Alves of Baltimore guests of Mr and Mrs James M. Aivey for several days. Nathan Kerschner of Pittsburgh spends days in Emmitsburg while planning barn repairs after a fire. Miss Thelma Cook and Miss Mercedes Haley of Waynesboro pa visit Emmitsburg friends for several days.
Sheriff says two men held for hearing on Thursday while Baltimore revenue agents continue to build the case. A raid on the Outerbridge Horsey distillery near Burkinsville left many questions as authorities expected arrests, with one farmer and his black farm hand held on habeas corpus writs and bail set. Twenty one barrels of Horsey whiskey were found hidden in a barn, and the farmer claimed men asked to store liquor there. Directors and officers for Fort Cumberland Hotel Company were elected at the annual meeting.
From James A Brady Western Newspaper Union manager the News received a letter of congratulations on the new edition of The News and Post praising the future under Greasy Southern Printing and Manufacturing Company management.
Senator O. E. Weller’s letter to State Senator Charles F. Goodell reveals Weller’s opposition to Senator France’s stance against the Harding armament treaties. The Maryland Republicans’ Annapolis caucus censures are cited, with Weller praising the treaties as world peace pillars and noting they reduce taxation and armament burdens.
Elis Lewis Garretson, who served as imperial potentate of the Order of the Mystic Shrine of North America in 1920, died suddenly at his suburban Tacoma home. Commencement dates at Mount St Marys College and Saint Josephs are set for June 15 and 16, with venue changes to allow archbishop’s address. The University of Michigan had loaned funds to needy students for over nine decades without a borrower default.

Tornadoes swept through Arkansas and Oklahoma killing at least 21 and injuring many as dwellings were demolished. Reports from McAlester Gowen Ping Bluff and Getsemana describe multiple fatalities including six Black individuals and four white residents. Wires were down and rail passengers described the storm’s path through eastern Jefferson and southeastern Lonoke counties.
New York March 14 The early stock market showed irregular movement with former favorites dull or unchanged while minor specialties surged. Utilities and gas stocks led gains with Market Street Hallway preferred and others up one to four points. autos rose about one. Sugars and food shares strong as Oilx buying concentrated in Comien and Mexican Petroleum. Cat money opened at 4 percent.
Customs inspectors in San Francisco confiscated 224 bottles of Scotch whiskey hidden tied to the anchor of the steamship Melville Dollar. The discovery marks another method used to smuggle liquor aboard incoming ships.
More than 100 armed deputies and American Legion volunteers plus residents left Jacksonville at daylight for the widest search yet for moonshine stills in Duval County. The raid plans to sweep within a 20 mile radius west of Jacksonville, inching through every nook for illicit liquor caches.
The Assembly passed a bill aimed at put and take with one dissenting vote. The measure bans sale of gambling implements and those used for chance in winning or losing money, and would also prohibit dice roulette wheels and related paraphernalia. Seymour E. Kay Cox, Houston promoter, waived examination in Federal Court and said his Texas affairs were fine as he awaited return to face charges.
