Proposed legislation would boost aid to education
By mid March several education spending bills are under study at the General Assembly. Senate Bill 1010 ties state aid growth to per student appropriations for public colleges beginning July 1, while House Bill 1552 would raise community college aid in increments. Maryland would raise funds for Frederick Community College and most colleges receive higher base grants, with adjustments for part time students. The capital construction allocation faces cuts and shifts, with SB 635 tying aid to local financial capacity. Vocational set asides rise under SB 296, and costs for out of county placements shift to the state education department.
