Waterfowl Shortage Blamed On Poor Nesting In Canada
ANNAPOLIS AP Poor nesting conditions in Canada rather than a dwindling food supply on the Eastern Shore are blamed for a decline in migrating waterfowl through Maryland. Ralph A. Bitely of the Department of Natural Resources testified that there is plenty of food for ducks geese and swans in Maryland, and the real problem is in Canada where the birds nest. He spoke during a Senate committee hearing on a bill to legalize private feeding of wild waterfowls in Maryland. Senator Markus argued that geese left water for corn and ducks for wheat while lawmakers raised concerns about federal baiting statutes, with conservationist Sherley Ewing defending baiting for wildlife management.
