Dickerson compost fire draws 100 firefighters for 16 hours
More than 100 firefighters from Montgomery Frederick and Howard counties battled a blaze at Montgomery's Yard Trim Compost Facility in Dickerson for about 16 hours ending at 2 am. Spontaneous combustion in rows 16 feet high of dry compacted mulch sparked the fire, with heat and wind spreading embers across 100 15 row piles. The response included seven units from Frederick and tankers from neighboring counties plus Dulles Airport, as smoke forced Martinsburg Road closures near Md 28 and Washehe Road. Residents reported embers leaping between sections and officials planned continued monitoring through Monday night.
