Sports Illustrated probes WBC rankings under fire
The Sports Illustrated investigation argues the World Boxing Council shows dubious rankings and mass matchups while favoring WBC fighters and officials. It cites quotes from ranking chairman Bob Busse and promoter Bob Arum, plus examples like Mensah Kpalogo’s improbable challenger fate in 1979 and a mismatch in Los Angeles.

Vargas climbs to No 10 flyweight in WBA rise
The report traces Aniceto Vargas from Hawaii through a San Francisco upset of Cesar Gomez Kee to a sudden WBA No 10 ranking. It notes his WBC placement at No 9 the same month and his brief 1977 retirement, followed by a return for title attempts and a 1979 draw with Kee, with persistent ranking by both bodies for 38 months. The piece quotes Sulaiman on the ratings decision.
