Fifth A Bomb Set Off In Nevada Desert Test

LAS VEGAS November 9 The fifth atomic blast in the 1955 test series went off at Yucca Flat at 5 20 am from a 300 foot tower. It produced a brilliant white flash seen in Las Vegas about 75 miles away and a white cloud rose to 20 000 to 25 000 feet. Observers noted no felt shock in Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City described the event as weak and fleeting like a lightning flash. Army officials say smoke screens may shield heat radiation but not the blast or pressure wave. Gamma rays remain a danger. The test was considered a baby detonation with limited shock effect.
