Reds May Be Surprise Club

Tampa Florida March 10 The Cincinnati Reds may be a surprise club in the National League pennant race says rookie manager Luke Sewell. He cites improved pitching and more runs from a young lineup featuring Lloye Merriman Ted Kluszewski Grady Hatton Red Stallcup and Herman Wehmeier. Ewell Blackwell’s return from surgery impresses Sewell as a likely comeback star with solid weight and form. Cooper Northey and Walker Cooper show noticeable improvement after late season moves and weight reductions.

Maryland’s Subversive Activities Act of 1949 moves into effect tomorrow after the Court of Appeals indicated it would issue a mandate for its February 9 decision. State officials say the loyalty law, paused for 11 months during court challenges, activates when the mandate is filed. Attorney General Hall Hammond declined to rule before receiving the mandate whether the law will be fully in force. The law remains subject to voter approval on the November ballot due to referendum petitions. Annapolis weighs the court ruling as the mandate heads to the street.
