Progress on Harpers Ferry Park Slows

HAGERSTOWN March 9 Progress on the two state Harpers Ferry National Monument has slowed but not stopped. Deeds for nearly all land on the West Virginia side have been transferred to the federal government and NPS planning continues without extra cost. Maryland side land title searches and negotiations lag, with one farm priced so high the park plan was rerouted. Dr J Walter Coleman heads the project and expects initial work at modest cost, focusing first on fire cleanup and site preparation. As funds arrive, roads and a headquarters with leaflets and guides will follow. Over 1 000 acres are planned. monument status signals significance, not a statue.
