American forces press on in pursuit after an outlaw raid into New Mexico prompted a military response. The operation targets Pancho Villa and his raiders, with troops advancing across the border region to confront the group and restore order.
The text notes German advances two miles southeast of Douaumont and near Verdun with the fort of Vaux captured, while a trench loss at Maisons de Champagne is reported by the Berlin war office. The fragment references a Nowa pan the pawn.
Nine civilians and seven U S soldiers were killed and wounded in a sudden attack on Columbus N M by Villa and a large band. The town, 560 to 1000 strong, was overrun at dawn as fires were started and buildings burned. Thirteen U S cavalrymen charged, driving the attackers back after an hour of fighting, with 24 bodies counted in town and surroundings.
