The Frederick City government rejected a 3.7 square mile annexation plan after strong landowner opposition. Forty two property owners asked for 25 year tax exemptions as a condition for consent, while Mayor E Paul Magaha blasted opponents as selfish and accused some signatories of duplicity.
A county delegation proposes a five member study commission to evaluate establishing a four People's Court system in Frederick County to replace Trial Magistrates' Courts. If approved by the General Assembly the commission would report next year and expenses would be paid by the county.
State police report two break ins last night at Compton's Store in Rocky Ridge and Hamilton's Store in Woodsboro. The burglars forced a back door at Compton's and an open window at Hamilton's, stealing watches cigarettes lighters small change and merchandise totaling about $200. Investigators Richard Conklin and Topr. Daniel Tharp say the same culprits are possible. no suspects yet.
The old Brunswick High School with athletic field sold for 22000 to a W Va couple who run Tri State Mobile Homes in Charles Town. The Sabillasville school brought 6600 to S D Sherman of Hagerstown who considers light manufacturing. The Brunswick site seller plans to open a mobile home estate on the lot.
The Frederick County Board of Education named Robert E. Hess supervisor of social studies and W. Kenneth Johns vice principal of Governor Thomas Johnson High School. Hess, formerly vice principal at West Frederick Junior High, succeeds Karl S. Manwiller, now principal at Johnson High. Johns, longtime educator and former Bel Air Junior-Senior High teacher and principal of Southern Garrett County, holds degrees from University of Denver and Teachers College Columbia University.
The Maryland Public Service Commission said Frederick Transit Co. buses would be back in service this afternoon after six days of idle. One bus was operating this morning with two more expected to return as certificates of financial responsibility were corrected after DMV inspections blamed an insurer error.
A Thurmont businessman says a bid by area businessmen and pilots to take over Frederick City Airport failed after refusing to buy obsolete equipment. Theodore J. Whalen, Whalen Enterprises, claims the city mismanaged the airstrip and that losses exceed 2000 dollars monthly. The group had outbid Whalen in January 1965 but could not finalize terms.
Forecasters expect above normal March temperatures in Frederick County under sunny skies and light winds. Today's high should near 50 degrees after a 17 degree coldest night. Tuesday topped at 37 with a 19 degree low.
An isolated U S Special Forces camp and Montagnard fighters repelled a fierce assault along the Laos border. A C47 was shot down, radio contact was lost at dawn and later restored as defenders held the position. Casualties were reported among Montagnard and American personnel.
Singapore based sources report anti communist demonstrations in Jakarta with 10 000 students breaching barricades to seize the Education Ministry Building. One university student was shot dead during protests near the Chinese Communist consulate in Makasar Celebes.
George John Gessner, 29, released from the U S penitentiary after five years, says justice delayed is justice denied. He was convicted in 1964 of giving nuclear weapons secrets to the Soviet Union, but an appeals court overturned the conviction due to involuntary confession. Gessner plans to return to college and maintains his political views.
The New York stock market moved higher in fairly active early trading as investors weighed earnings and economic data. Major indices showed gains led by technology and financial shares with optimism about corporate results and growth.
Frederick County schools superintendent Dr. John L. Carnochan challenged portions of two News-Post series on Governor Thomas Johnson High School. He presented a list of alleged factual errors to the school board, disputing land area and student capacity figures and noting possible team teaching implications.
President Johnson called for a three-stage national crime strategy and urged rapid passage of pending bills. He proposed a blue ribbon commission to overhaul federal criminal laws by 1968 and asked Congress to raise Law Enforcement Assistance Act funding from 7.2 million to 13.7 million. He also pressed for tighter gun commerce controls to reduce illicit sales.
The Maryland House of Delegates planned to debate proposals to abolish the death penalty and replace it with a new system for appointing judges.
