Stamps from Salvador, Guatemala, and Brazil highlight coffee pride. Salvador issued a 35-centavo stamp featuring a young woman with coffee branches, claiming the best coffee. Guatemala followed seven years later with a Quirigua monolith stamp and the world’s best coffee inscription. Brazil, celebrating two centuries of coffee, issued commemoratives in 1997 and a new stamp with an engraved frame and lithographed vignette of coffee bags.

Freight Rate Increase Granted by USIC to Aid Railroads
The Interstate Commerce Commission approved a yearly freight rate rise totaling 270 million dollars to prevent railroad insolvencies and spur industry. Railworkers had pushed for 15 percent, about 470 million, but were disappointed. Roosevelt convened leaders from commission, Congress, railroads, and labor to plan next steps. The new rates add five percent for farm and forest products and ten percent for most other rail movement, with prior increases on heavy commodities largely folded in. Some fuels and minerals are excluded or only modestly raised.
