School boosts computer counts with plans for equity
Mr. Kelly says the system has added 700 computers this year for a total of 5,000 with about 3,800 for student use. Macs arrive at Glade Elementary and Urbana High, while Ethernet networks link new and existing facilities, prompting calls for more technicians and a budgeted $30,000 for an additional computer technician. Equity concerns arise as newer schools gain better gear, but officials insist a universal plan pursues curriculum goals across the county.

Rominger Warns Food Stamp Cuts Jeopardize Health Gains
In a letter to Pat Roberts acting Agriculture Secretary Richard Rominger warned that proposed food stamp reductions threaten 30 years of health and nutrition gains and could cut retail food sales by 3 to 7 billion dollars over five years. Advocates for children said as many as 377,000 low income kids could lose subsidized care under GOP welfare legislation. The House Contract With America plan would fold nine child care programs into a single block grant and cap spending at 1.94 billion per year through 2000, with sponsors arguing the shift saves money and maintains coverage.
