Hatfield offered to resign before vote

Senate leaders disclosed that Mark Hatfield offered to resign to prevent the balanced budget amendment from failing. Spenders Lose Ground in Frederick County Election

In Frederick County, money didn’t decide the General Assembly race outcomes. Louise Snodgrass narrowly won a House seat with 13,607 votes while spending far less than rivals. Ronald Sundergill spent 67,629 and finished fourth. George Littrell spent 146,848 yet lost to Timothy Ferguson, who spent 67,525 and owes about 20,000. Debts and fundraising shaped the contests as Republicans outspent Democrats, with debt repayment plans and PAC money noted for several candidates. The lone Democrat winner was Sue Hecht, who surpassed $35,000 fundraising expectations with early big-giver support.

Myersville Woman Dies After U S 40 Accident

A 69 year old Myersville woman, Dorothy Bicie, died Saturday at Suburban Hospital after a crash on U S 40 between Gambrill Park Road and I 70. Eston Lantz, 66, of Frederick, remained in critical condition at Suburban Hospital. Police said Lantz crossed the center line, hitting Bicie’s car. Two state police helicopters airlifted victims from the scene. This is Frederick County’s fifth fatality of the year. investigation continues.

U N chief urges new social contract to fight poverty

U N Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali opened the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen with a call for a global social contract to aid the poor.
