Aramony trial opens in Virginia in United Way case
The former United Way leader William Aramony, 67, faces 53 felony counts and up to six years in prison as prosecutors allege he and two aides stole more than 1 million to fund gambling sprees and a New York City apartment for his 17 year old girlfriend. Witnesses said the charity grew to about 2,800 chapters under his 22 year presidency and that board members approved spending until media exposure in 1992 triggered scrutiny.
