First Steamboat Legend Stirs Maryland Town
The Hagerstown Globe reports an attempted theft from Creagerstown district Frederick county of a relic tied to Rumsey's steamboat claim as the world’s first steam powered craft. Rumsey, Frederick county native, conceived steam propulsion in 1785 and built the boat at Point of Rocks with Catoctin Furnace machinery. General Washington witnessed the boat moving against current at four to five miles an hour. The boiler and cylinder later served as boundary markers near Catoctin property and the Johnson farm land.
