Barings Losses Rise Above Early Estimate as ING Takes Over
London AP reports Barings losses topped the initial 1 billion estimate after Asian markets wild trading. Dutch group ING agreed to acquire Barings for 1 pound, taking on assets and liabilities and preserving 4,000 jobs, beating ABN Amro and Smith Barney bid. The collapse followed trader Nick Leeson’s bets in Japan, with Singapore contracts closed amid claims executives knew of problems.
