First Iraqi prisoners go home 35 allied POWs arrive safe in Saudi Arabia
Thirty five allied POWs including 15 Americans arrived in Riyadh from Iraq aboard a Red Cross chartered plane. They left northern Saudi Arabia for Baghdad as Baghdad radio reported Saddam Hussein had fired his interior minister and appointed a cousin to the post. The report highlighted the ongoing conflict as Republican Guard pay raises were announced. Among the released were two women soldiers Maj Rhonda L. Lance Cpl. James M. Lang, 20, from Oxon Hill, died when an enemy grenade exploded in his hands near Kuwait City. Lang’s unit, a 100 member Marine reserve team from Fort Detrick, had been in Saudi Arabia since December and was among the first to enter Kuwait during liberation operations.
