Government allows 3 1/2 percent rise in auto prices
Washington reports the Office of Price Stabilization authorized automakers to raise wholesale prices by 3 1/2 percent to partly offset higher costs. The measure extends last December's price freeze for 60 days and sets new rules for passing increases to consumers, with 2.625 percent estimated rise on a $2,000 car. Only new passenger autos are affected. used-car ceilings and sale of show-room stock under rising prices are addressed.

Governor McKeldin opposes tax hikes to fund raises, while education officials push for $500 teacher raises costing about $7.3 million annually.
