Stalin Decrees Broad Price Cuts in Food and Clothes

Moscow February 28 Prime Minister Stalin announced price cuts across 45 categories of food clothing and consumer goods to raise ruble purchasing power and bolster Soviet money abroad. Reductions include bread 10 percent cheese 20 percent and vodka 28 percent with restaurants and catering establishments directed to mirror the cuts. Public reaction in Moscow was swift as the decree signed with G M Malenkov aired on radio.

Supreme Court upholds ban on slow down tactic

Washington, Feb 28. The Supreme Court, by 5-4, sustains a Wisconsin law barring union slow down tactics aimed at interfering with production. the decision centers on worker coercion through unannounced stoppages, with Justice Douglas dissenting and Justice Jackson for the majority. The AFL United Auto Workers Local 232 represented Briggs and Stratton workers, who held 27 work-hour meetings during 1945-46 in a dispute.

College Fire Toll Is Nine

Gambler, O. reports the Kenyon College dormitory fire toll rose to nine with two earlier deaths and six students missing. Jackie McDonald, 18, of Hamilton died at Mount Vernon Mercy Hospital. Edward Brout, 19, of Mount Vernon NY died after trying to jump from a window. Marc S. Peck of Fenton Michigan died at Mercy Hospital. Fire officials say hot ashes hampered search inside the 122 year old Old Kenyon structure. President Chalmers announced hopes were abandoned for the missing students.

Yellow Springs Homemakers Club Meeting Highlights

Bernard Stull hosted the Yellow Springs Homemakers Club on February 22 with Mrs. Paul L. Willard presiding. Mrs. Nelson Tucker led scripture and prayer, Miriam Leiter demonstrated restyling old clothes, and Baird Harman spoke on home freezers. Delegates Willard and Staley planned spring council, and Amy Long organized exchanges. The meeting adjourned to March 22 at M Carroll Kehne’s home. Refreshments followed.
