Weed control in corn crops faces deep rooted invaders
Deep rooted perennials such as quackgrass curly dock yellow nutsedge and canada thistle persist in corn fields despite preemergence herbicides. Use Atrex plus oil for postemergence clean up, apply correct high rates, and select effective chemicals for the weed mix. Banvel and 2,4-D help with pigweed lambsquarters and several broadleaf weeds but not grasses. Weather and rainfall after application critically affect weed control. postemergence mop ups and spot roundup may be needed. Bess Myerson to Speak at College Days Event
Bess Myerson, Miss America 1945 and consumer advocate, will keynote the third annual College Days at UMBC near Catonsville on July 16, with a July 14 preview event for Maryland residents. She will discuss The Consumer in Today's Economy, with sign language interpretation for her July 14 talk. Dr. Pearl C. Brackett will close College Days July 16 with a talk on the Challenge of the 80s.

Leon Enfield of Knoxville has been appointed by the Maryland Farm Bureau to the National Advisory Council on Research Extension and Teaching.
