Order by mail with SASE to the MDA or pick up free copies at county extension offices or public libraries. A Maryland outbreak of brown hairy gypsy moth caterpillars has stripped leaves from oaks in Cecil County and spread to northern counties and nearby states. Gail Wiest recalls a crackling sound as they fed. Entomologist Ralph E. Webb notes 3 to 4 year cycles and warns they could establish if pesticides are not used. Cheap Dimilin is favored by some, but EPA bans its use in populated forested areas. other chemicals are pricier.

ACP funds in Frederick County run low for conservation cost share
Few dollars remain in ACP funds for cost sharing on agricultural conservation practices and very little is left for Frederick County. Producers with applications should watch mail for ACP notices. The local ASC Committee plans to fund only when work will begin soon, allocating dollars to vital projects rather than long delays.
