Conservation Committee Reports Loss Of Top Soil Impacts Yields

The Conservation Committee outlines that every inch of topsoil lost from Frederick County farm land could cut annual income by up to 10 percent. Field tests show corn yields dropping from 50 bushels per acre with 10 inches of topsoil to 25 with two inches, with other crops showing similar declines per inch of soil removal. Erosion reduces soil components and moisture retention, but practices like strip cropping and terraces counteract loss. Farmers can obtain advice from soil conservation districts and county agents.
