Optimism Pushes Dow Higher Ahead of Fed Meeting
Stocks rose on Monday as investors priced in a modest rate rise by the Federal Reserve this week. The Dow gained 102.6 points to 10,655.2 while the S&P 500 climbed to 1,331.35 and the Nasdaq rose to 2,602.44, led by software and Internet shares. Volume on the NYSE reached 652.91 million as traders awaited the Fed’s Open Market Committee meeting. Analysts predicted a quarter-point hike to curb inflation, with some saying a single increase might suffice for now. A Bond rally supported equities, with the 10-year Treasury yield easing to about 6.10%. Major gainers included JP Morgan and American Express, while Yahoo!, Microsoft, and Dupont helped the Nasdaq rise.

CareFirst seeks alternative rate agreements with Maryland hospitals
CareFirst Blue Cross and Blue Shield aims to negotiate alternative rate agreements with acute care hospitals in the Baltimore Washington area. The move, stated Monday, cites rising hospital costs and Health Services Cost Review Commission cost reductions as reasons. Hospitals would gain more control over length of stay and inpatient services for CareFirst’s 2.5 million members while maintaining access to affordable, high quality care. Maryland hospital costs run about 8 percent above the national average. CareFirst will assist hospitals with discharge planning and efficiency programs and hopes to meet with facilities in Montgomery, Carroll and five other counties, plus Baltimore City.

Corn and soy futures slide on cautious Chicago session
On Monday trading at the Chicago Board of Trade saw corn and soybeans slump while wheat rose. Soybeans hit a 20 year low as weather forecasts sparked volatility and near record acreage, with July prices dipping for corn and soybeans, and wheat edging higher on hard red winter crop concerns. Livestock also fell with live cattle hogs and pork bellies easing.
