Frederick officials say a temporary 6 inch line from Frederick to Walkersville could supply about 700 gallons a minute, delivering just over 1 million gallons daily and reducing reliance on tainted supply. Residents urged to continue boiling water for now with three minutes of boil time before use.
In Walkersville, residents rely on a tanker truck stationed at Walkersville High School for drinking water and basic needs. Erik Howard of Fountain Rock subdivision says lack of tap water is an inconvenience but manageable for his family of four despite ongoing supply issues.
Hydrogeologist Thomas Aley says it may take over a year to flush dangerous bacteria from Walkersville wells without help. He recommends placing an electrical pump in an unused well to suck contaminated groundwater to the wastewater plant for treatment. Officials plan to hire a well driller this week near Glade Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. results are not guaranteed but this method is common for groundwater pollution.
A 25 year old Wal-Mart employee Theresa M Lang of Jefferson was arrested after managers and surveillance tied her to stealing about $30,000 from Frederick store cash registers over six months. She confessed to taking money and was found with $1,000 in cash at arrest. Frederick County Sheriff's Office reported the thefts spanned several months.
A Jefferson resident, William Arthur Bankins, 76, died after his 1988 Nissan Maxima failed to yield to a northbound Ford SUV on Md. 355 at Holiday Drive. The Ford, driven by Karl Helmold, struck the Nissan. Bankins died at Maryland Trauma Center. Helmold and his wife Sarah were hospitalized briefly and released.
SABILLASVILLE The secretary of Maryland’s Department of Juvenile Justice ordered an investigation into security at Victor Cullen Academy and the Charles H. Hickey Jr School after a nurse was assaulted by an inmate and three Cullen youths escaped Sunday morning. Police traced the escape to two dorm windows and a 1992 blue Dynasty used in the getaway. investigators question supervision and screens bypassed during the incident.
Frederick County farmers report a severe drought with stunted corn and dry fields. Veterans like James M Stup and Trego Zimmerman recall unusually dry springs as only scant showers shortfall remains. Weather data show June rainfall far below average and July is forecast to be normal.
