Eisenhower Discusses Neptune Incident and Damages Offer
President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles reviewed the Neptune patrol plane shoot down over the Bering Strait and the Soviet offer to pay half the damages during a two hour flight from Bangor to Washington. Dulles said the Soviet reply did not meet our expectations as to full reparations, while officials offered no light on acceptance. The episode followed a six day New England tour ending in Maine with stops in Skowhegan and Bangor amid public appearances.
