Butler Attacks Southern Democrats as Disloyal and Segregation Sparks Debate
Washington June 27 longtime Democratic leader Paul M Butler accused some southern and southwestern party members of working for the Republicans while posing as Democrats He warned the party must not force loyalty but acknowledged potential sanctions in a political good faith effort The remarks were tied to his recent Texas peace tour and he exempted Texas Governor Allan Shivers from censure. In a separate exchange Butler outlined views on Eisenhower and the 1956 campaign. He stressed opposition to segregation within the party.
