New Apple Trees Grown In Jars Cut Orchard Costs
USDA scientists in Beltsville use tissue culture to grow apple trees in 16 ounce jars, producing shoots that root in four weeks. From lab to field in four to five months, these mini trees cost under $2 each versus about $5 for grafted stock, with dwarf varieties offering even higher planting densities and earlier fruit. Potential traits for true dwarfing may be transferred from tissue cultured stock or achieved with growth regulators to limit vegetative growth.
