Airports row in Senate hearing over transfer plan
Virginia and District of Columbia officials urged moving Dulles and National airports to a regional authority, while Maryland officials led by Gov. Harry Hughes warned of unfair competition for BWI. The plan envisions a 11 member board, 35 year lease, $47 million debt, and mixed FAA regional oversight with $250 million in proposed capital upgrades. Senator Hollings opposed shifting federal control, advocating funding from an FAA trust fund instead.
