May Reduce Security Tax Faces Senate Skepticism
Washington June 21 lawmakers voiced doubts that Congress will cancel a scheduled rise in social security taxes. Republicans and Democrats warned the plan could weaken the system that funds retirement and survivor benefits for about 60 million workers. Eisenhower said reserve funds total about 16 billion, urging postponement of the 2 percent payroll tax rise due next Jan 1. Congress debate focuses on whether postponement is justified and whether enough facts exist to back it.
