Frederick sweltered in the hottest June weather in seven years with forecasts of 95 to 100 and a potential 100-degree day. Airport readings showed 90 degrees by mid-morning, with a 62 percent humidity and no heat prostrations reported. Heat kept crowds at pools and soda fountains busy while fans ran overtime and sleeping porches filled. last night was the warmest so far this year at 78.
The Associated Press reports Baltimore temperatures near 100 degrees with no relief expected until Saturday when cooler air may arrive from the West. Two Baltimore men died from heat, more than 100 treated for heat prostration, and Eastern Shore chicken farmers feared losses. Forecasters predicted Baltimore could break the June 26 record, with a possible 97 to 100 degrees. The hottest June day in Baltimore’s history was 105 in 1934.
Ocean City hosts Maryland State Firemen's Association convention with 3 front runners for president, including B Harrison Shipley Jr James Jarman and Marbury Gates. Heat waves grip the East South and Midwest with many cities posting 100 degree readings. Deaths and hundreds of heat prostrations reported across Virginia Arkansas Ohio Philadelphia New York and other areas. Cooler air nears the North Central states but no relief for eastern hot spots is forecast.
Receiver H Reese Shoe maker Jr reports assets of 36 1299 12 and paid accounts 861 73 totaling 7 160 85. Tax refund 1588 57 applied to unpaid withholding and social security taxes. Court ordered preferred claims paid including city state county taxes and unemployment funds. remaining funds to be applied to other preferred claims per court order.
Governor McKeldin reviewed a parade of 34 fire companies, four bands and four drum corps in Westminster as part of a week-long carnival by the local fire department. Irishtown and Gettysburg, both Pa, won $100 for best appearance and drum corps, Hampstead auxiliary earned $50 for best appearance among women marchers.
The Presbyterian Church of Frederick announces the ordination of Donald James Davis for Friday at eight o'clock. The Presbytery of Baltimore will convene at 7 30 with Rev. Lloyd G. Ice presiding. A reception follows in the church social rooms. Davis will begin ministry as an assistant at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Washington.
In Pusan on June 26 five South Korean military and police leaders submitted resignations led by Maj Won Young Duk and including the national police chief and Rhee’s bodyguard head. Spokesman Clarence Ryee said they quit for failing to protect the president, though some said Rhee asked for the resignations after a secret society member attempted to shoot the president. the gun misfired during an address. A weed-cutting roundup follows complaints of uncut weeds after police notice, while New York markets on June 26 await guidance amid steel trade tensions.
Governor McKeldin announced July fifth and Independence Day as legal holidays. Court House offices will close both dates and bank offices likely follow. City Hall may close except Police Department. many state offices also to close for the holiday.
Senator Lodge announced that General Eisenhower will move to Chicago next week to establish campaign headquarters for the Republican presidential nomination. Lodge, his campaign manager, said Eisenhower will continue meeting delegates and that details would be released from Ike for President headquarters.
The Housing Authority of Frederick paid 1527.77 in lieu of taxes to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen for Taney Homes and Lincoln Apartments. Exempt by law from taxes, the authority makes payments for police and fire protection and other city county services. A similar payment will be made to the County Commissioners soon. Carver Apartments, under construction, will follow with comparable arrangements after a year of operation and rent collection.
Dr. James Franklin Wright of Denton and Memorial Hospital Easton died Tuesday at the U S Naval Hospital Philadelphia at age 41. Johns Hopkins and Jefferson trained, he served in World War II Navy and retired as commander in 1946. Survived by wife and two daughters, mother, brother W A Stewart and two sisters. Funeral set for Denton tomorrow at two oclock.
In Denton June 26 Laverty Steele 2 died after a heart attack struck at her car ready to go to choir practice. She was district manager for Eastern Shore Public Service Company. Deeds recorded in the Clerks office show Angeline Eeworthy selling property about one and a half miles west of Frederick along Butterfly Lane near S85. William C Hamm and Lester L Curman family properties about three miles west of Frederick near the old White House on Edgemont road for around 7008 dollars.
Sen. Robert A. Taft charged that Gov. Thomas E. Dewey’s political organization is directing Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Republican presidential campaign. He warned that if Eisenhower is nominated a weak campaign could cost him November. Taft defended GOP principles and criticized Gallup’s poll support for Eisenhower, saying the Dewey faction shapes the campaign strategy.
President Truman canceled his mid afternoon news conference due to the intense Washington heat. Secretary Joseph Short announced at 10 30 p m the temperature was 93 degrees and forecasts showed near 99 by 3 p m. The unair conditioned old State Department conference room required fans be off so questions could be heard.
SAN FRANCISCO June 26 The Army announced two Marylanders were aboard the transport Gen William M Black arriving with 2930 combat rotation troops from Korea. Names listed include Frederick-Set Robert E. Baker Box 491 Smithsburg Cp Robert A Forney Rt 2.
Democrats of Western Maryland plan a Monday dinner at Peter Pan Inn to honor Stella Werner the standard bearer in the Sixth District congressional race. Montgomery County resident Mrs Jane Burhans chairs the event with a local committee of Mrs Herman Brows Mrs John Fisher Mrs Raymond Strube and Mrs Havel W Lease. Werner will be introduced at a reception and then speak briefly.
MUNSAN Korea June 3 Maj Gen William K Harrison Jr charged the Communists with at once agreeing and disagreeing with Russia during stalled Korean armistice talks. He noted the Red insistence on forcing repatriation clashes with Soviet WWII policy and said the posture made progress unlikely at Panmunjom. A further meeting was scheduled for tomorrow at 11 am.
Governor Theodore R. McKeldin will address the second annual joint Christian Endeavor rally of Frederick Montgomery Carroll and Howard counties on August 3 at Parr's Spring near Ridgeville. The event will center at the four county line point with a Bible center post, and planning meetings with 100 leaders were set for Sunday in Baker Park. Co chairs include Warren P. E. Smith and Roger Boone. A park picnic is planned, with Park Way Church of God as a rain fallback. Parr's Spring sits on the Tapatasco river, near Fort McHenry harbor, marking county boundaries and river sources.
Polio spread keeps Texans anxious as Texas reports 146 new cases last week, raising the 1952 total to 917. Houston area bears the heaviest burden with 45 new cases and 321 patients in hospitals. State Health Officer George W. Cox blames open privies for the outbreak and cites an estimated eight to ten thousand outhouses inside Houston.
The Frederick County Chapter of the Maryland Society for Crippled Children and Adults holds its second annual meeting this evening with a public session at 8 o'clock. Clarence C Carty chairs a panel on handicapped programs with speaker William Hill and Mrs John Shorrow. Board elections follow the session, then officer elections. Executive committee includes President Carty Vice Presidents Brank and Dr Wayne C Neely Treasurer W Jerome Offutt Secretary Mrs C Lease Burwnd Trustees Mrs Ernest Berger and Mrs Paul 1S. Michael.
The 1952 steel strike enters its 25th day with 650,000 idle workers costing about 253 million in wages. Allied industry layoffs surge nationwide. 216,320 workers affected or told to report after July 3. Cantons and Youngstown area relief, Chicago area aid, and Duquesne near Pittsburgh declare emergencies as officials urge mills to resume operations. Efforts to aid strikers exist but the union does not provide strike benefits.
In a brutal six hour clash near Yonchon Western Korea infantrymen and armor clashed with Communist forces. Allied troops used flame throwers to destroy bunkers as Marines and carrier air units struck airstrips rail yards and supply targets across Central and Eastern Korea.
Frederick Junior Chamber of Commerce members toured the R. Paul Smith power plant of Potomac Edison in Williamsport during their regular June meeting. The visit was part of a series to familiarize Jaycees with local industries and their challenges, arranged by Raymond Bowers Jr. A follow up report on the regional softball tournament was given by William Burger, and William Thomas provided an update on the Soap Box Derby project after the plant visit.
Washington sweltered on June 25 with temperatures near ninety eight as a water main burst cutting supply to the Capitol Hill area. The White House pool was filled for a cooling dip and 30 million gallons were wasted during a seven hour drought period. Police logged one arrest, Edward J. Page of Buckeye Town, for disturbing the peace during the incident.
