Traffic Jams Up Once Again

City officials study relief routes for Market and Patrick streets with Chief Fred M. Straley conducting a detailed traffic survey. Proposals include opening East Street northward to the Pennsylvania Railroad, making Middle Alley one way north to Eighth Street, and Chapel Alley one way south to Patrick Street.

Plan to reconfigure Bentz street traffic and parking

Proposal aims to eliminate park area on Bentz street between Fourth and Seventh avenues to create parking. Add north and south travel lanes on east and west sides with a by pass and electric light at Fourth and Bentz. By passes would redirect southbound Route 15/26 traffic via Bentz or Fast, reverse for northbound, and reroute westbound Route 40 traffic via Franklin to Jefferson with opposite for eastbound Route 30. A proposed new street west of Route 240 would serve northbound traffic.

Downtown loading plan eyed to ease congestion

A proposal discussed by the Mayor and Aldermen suggests designated loading areas on each block of the business district, but the Chief questions practicality and notes opposition. Town officials consider parking meters and rear-alley truck parking as alternatives to curbside loading, with expansions planned on North Market and East Patrick streets.
