Frederick County officials weigh red light camera use after seeing Howard County results. Arlington study cited shows lights ran every 12 minutes on average with peaks every 5 minutes. Cameras cost 5000 to 10000 dollars per intersection and licensed contractor EDS would handle maintenance.
Ester Maria Pena, a 58 year old D C teacher, says Deputy John Keyser and two others pulled her from a 1976 Dodge with a gun drawn after she drove slowly on Maryland 15. She was handcuffed for jail before court. Authorities say Keyser followed standard procedure after she failed to yield.
Frederick residents oppose moving an unnamed alley between Fifth Street and Dill Avenue from two way to southbound only. Mayor Jim Grimes and aldermen approved the change effective June 15. Resident Teresa Ankney criticized lack of survey, study and public input, urging restoration to two way until proper investigation and wider input is conducted. Police Capt. Harold Domer cited a 1995 study showing majority support.
A family of four fled rising Bennett Creek waters when their station wagon stalled at a ford on Monocacy Bottom Road. The parents placed the children on the roof as water covered the hood. rescuers and neighbor Sam Jones helped bring them to shore. The incident prompted warnings about crossing the ford in rain.
New technology helps couples manage bridal registries with handheld scanners and online access. Carrie Lear of Pier 1 Imports notes about 100 guests per wedding, offering a wide gift selection. Bride to be Jacqui Bell says scanning items is simple and minimizes duplicates for out of town guests. Registered at Hewhts, she ensures guests know what she has received.
Senator Timothy Ferguson, Maryland official from Frederick County, announces plans to seek re election as a Republican. He defends his record and criticizes Democratic and Republican Senate leadership, arguing the GOP must adopt a tougher stance. Ferguson warns that without change in Maryland government his children's generation will face trouble. He notes his remarks are controversial but necessary to push his agenda in a Democratic controlled chamber.
The City of Frederick invites bids for the William Donald Schaefer state office building at 106 East All Saints Street. Proposals due July 18 at City Hall, 2 p.m. The four story brick structure houses four state agencies and is leased to Maryland until May 31, 2005 with renewal options. Mayor Jim Grimes says offers will aid downtown revitalization and tax rolls, while City reserves rights to accept or reject any proposal.
